Independent structural design checks
An independent check is worth having when the consequences of an error are significant, when a design has passed through several hands, or when a client simply wants a second qualified opinion before committing to construction.
Bebbington Engineering Studio provides independent technical review of structural designs, including design assurance and buildability review. Formal checking is undertaken where the scope, category and appointment are agreed in advance.
Typical projects
- Review of structural calculations and drawings prepared by others
- Design assurance reviews at a defined project stage or gateway
- Buildability and constructability review of a developed design
- Review of temporary works designs prepared by others, where separately agreed
- Second-opinion reviews commissioned by clients, funders or contractors
- Category 3 checks, by prior agreement on scope and independence
Who it is for
- Clients wanting independent assurance before construction begins
- Contractors reviewing a design they are taking responsibility for
- Design teams seeking peer review on an unusual or high-consequence element
- Organisations with internal governance requiring an independent technical review
What we typically need from you
- The design calculations, drawings and specifications to be reviewed
- The design brief, loading assumptions and design criteria used
- The relevant codes, standards and any client-specific requirements
- Confirmation of the review category, depth and project stage required
- Any previous review comments and the responses to them
What you typically receive
- A written review setting out comments, queries and observations
- Identification of matters requiring clarification or further work by the designer
- Buildability observations where these form part of the agreed scope
- Where formally appointed, a check record consistent with the agreed category
Scope and limitations
- A review comments on the information provided; it does not transfer design responsibility from the original designer unless expressly agreed in writing.
- The depth of review, and whether it constitutes a formal check, is defined in the appointment before work begins.
- Independence requirements for formal checking are confirmed at appointment stage.
- Site inspection, testing and construction monitoring are separate services.
Confirming the depth of review required — comment-level assurance or formal checking — at the outset keeps the scope, programme and independence position clear for everyone involved.
