Structural steelwork

Structural steel supply, fabrication and installation

Engineered steelwork supplied, fabricated, delivered and installed — with structural design provided by BES where required, or fabrication coordinated from suitable structural information provided by the client's appointed engineer.

  • Steelwork information reviewed for fabrication requirements, with structural design undertaken by BES where included within our appointment.
  • Fabrication, treatment and installation coordinated through specialist partners.
  • Structural information suitable for Building Control where the works require approval.
  • One point of contact from enquiry through to installed steelwork.

Where are you starting from?

Three ways into a steel enquiry.

I know what steel I need

Build a steel schedule and tell us whether you require fabrication, protective treatment, delivery or installation.

Build my steel enquiry

I have an engineer's design

Upload calculations, drawings or a steel schedule and request a fabrication and supply quotation priced against that information.

Upload my design information

I need BES to design it

Describe the project and BES can establish the structural engineering requirements before anything is fabricated.

Start my project

Where structural information is provided by another engineer, BES prices and coordinates fabrication against that information. Responsibility for a third-party structural design remains with its author unless BES is separately appointed to review or re-design it.

Why buy steel from an engineer

The engineering happens before the steel is cut.

Most steelwork problems on site are not fabrication problems. They are information problems: a beam that arrives without the right holes, a connection that was never designed, a padstone that does not exist, a length that does not fit the opening that was actually built.

Bebbington Engineering Studio approaches steel supply the way it approaches design — the member sizes, connections, bearings and interfaces are resolved before anything is cut. Where the structural design sits with another engineer, that information is reviewed for what fabrication needs from it. Fabrication, protective treatment, delivery and installation are then coordinated through specialist partners who work to that information.

What is included

From schedule to installed steel.

01

Engineered steel supply

Universal beams and columns, channels, hollow sections, angles and flats supplied cut to length to a schedule that has been checked against the structural design.

02

Fabrication

Cutting, drilling, welding, end plates, cleats, base plates, stiffeners and bespoke fabrications, coordinated through specialist fabrication partners working to BES information.

03

Protective treatment

Primer, galvanising or intumescent fire protection specified to suit the exposure conditions and any fire resistance requirement identified for the project.

04

Delivery

Delivery arranged to suit the site — access, offload method, restricted streets and crane or HIAB requirements considered before the load leaves the works.

05

Installation

Installation coordinated through specialist installation partners, including temporary propping and the sequence in which existing structure is removed.

06

Engineering behind it

Where structural design forms part of our appointment: member design, connection design, bearing and padstone details, and the structural information Building Control will expect to see — prepared by a Chartered Structural Engineer.

How it works

From idea to installed steel.

  1. 01

    Enquiry

Tell us what you need. If you already hold an engineer's schedule, send it. If you do not, describe the opening or the structure and we will work out what is required.

  2. 02

    Engineering review

The steelwork information is reviewed for what fabrication requires — sizes, connections, bearings, restraint and any temporary works implication. Where structural design is included in our appointment, that design is carried out by BES.

  3. 03

    Quotation

A written quotation covering supply, fabrication, treatment, delivery and, where requested, installation, with the assumptions it relies on set out plainly.

  4. 04

    Fabrication

On acceptance, the steelwork is fabricated and treated by a specialist fabrication partner to the agreed information.

  5. 05

    Delivery

Steelwork is delivered to site on an agreed date, with offloading arrangements confirmed in advance.

  6. 06

    Installation

Where installation is included, works are carried out by a specialist installation partner following the agreed propping and removal sequence.

Typical applications

Where this steelwork is used.

From a single beam over a kitchen opening through to industrial plant support steelwork.

  • Removal of load-bearing walls and formation of large openings
  • Rear, side and wrap-around extensions
  • Loft conversions and new floor structures
  • Chimney breast removal and localised support
  • Garage conversions and change of use
  • Mezzanine floors and racking support
  • Portal frames, plant support and industrial alterations
  • Balconies, canopies, walkways and access steelwork

The Steelwork Quote Builder collects project information so that an enquiry can be prepared. It does not size structural members, verify structural adequacy, confirm availability or constitute a quotation, an offer or structural design advice. Steel sizes, connections and temporary works must be confirmed by structural design before fabrication. Fabrication, delivery and installation are coordinated through specialist fabrication and installation partners under a written appointment.
