Langage Energy Centre

Plymouth, Devon

Project overview

Langage Energy Centre is a large gas-fired combined-cycle power station near Plymouth in Devon, providing electricity to the national grid together with associated energy infrastructure on the surrounding site. Facilities of this scale represent a significant piece of national energy infrastructure and are built to demanding programme and commissioning constraints.

The structural steelwork comprises the turbine hall and its enclosure, boiler and heat recovery structures, the exhaust stack support, pipework and cable support steelwork, and extensive access platforms, stairs and walkways. The framing is dictated by the plant: crane runs, equipment maintenance routes, thermal movement of hot pipework, and vibration from rotating machinery all shape the arrangement. Coordination between the structural steelwork, the mechanical plant supplier and the construction sequence is continuous, since large items of plant frequently have to be placed before the surrounding steel can be completed.

Carl contributed to the structural steelwork engineering and delivery of the project while employed at William Hare Group.
