Project overview
Perspex International manufactures cast acrylic sheet at its site in Darwen, Lancashire. The works form part of an established, continuously operating manufacturing facility, where production areas, process plant, storage and site infrastructure all share a constrained industrial site.
Structural engineering for a facility of this kind covers process building frames, plant support steelwork, platforms and access, and the structural interfaces with mechanical and process equipment. Loads arise as much from the plant as from the building: vessels, ducting, conveyors and pipework impose point loads, thermal effects and, in places, dynamic actions that have to be carried back to foundations without excessive deflection or vibration. Equally important is the fact that the factory continues to operate around the works, so construction sequencing, temporary support and access have a direct effect on production.
Carl contributed to the structural engineering design and delivery of the project while employed at Clancy Consulting, working within the consultant design team.
