Project overview
Neste's facility in the port of Rotterdam is one of the largest renewable diesel plants of its kind, producing fuel from waste and residue raw materials. The plant occupies a major site within the Europoort petrochemical cluster, with process units, tank farms, pipe racks, control accommodation and extensive site infrastructure.
Structural steelwork on a process plant of this scale serves the process rather than enclosing space. Pipe racks carry dense arrays of process pipework and cable containment with thermal expansion, anchor and guide forces to resolve; process unit structures support vessels, columns, exchangers and their associated access and maintenance provision; and blast, fire and hazardous-area requirements influence framing, connection detailing and protection. Modularisation and offsite fabrication are used extensively on such projects, which puts a premium on dimensional control and interface management.
Carl contributed to the structural steelwork engineering and delivery of the project while employed at William Hare Group.
