Project overview
The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall is the Ministry of Defence's rehabilitation facility for wounded, injured and sick Armed Forces personnel, replacing the former facility at Headley Court. The purpose-built campus in Nottinghamshire combines specialist clinical rehabilitation, hydrotherapy, biomechanics and gait laboratories, prosthetics, therapy spaces, gymnasia, accommodation and supporting medical facilities within a landscaped historic estate.
The structural engineering had to serve highly specialised clinical requirements. Hydrotherapy pools, imaging equipment and laboratory instrumentation impose demanding loading, waterproofing, stiffness and vibration criteria; extensive plant and services distribution has to pass through the structural zone without compromising clinical space; and the buildings sit within the setting of a historic estate, which influenced massing, foundations and external works. Delivery required continuous coordination between structural, architectural, services and clinical planning disciplines across a large multi-building campus.
Carl contributed to the structural engineering design and delivery of the project while employed at Capita Real Estate & Infrastructure, working as part of a multidisciplinary design team.
