Residential Alteration & Extension

Castleford, West Yorkshire

Project reference: 98A Aketon Road

Project overview

Structural engineering design for the extensive remodelling and extension of an existing dwelling in Castleford, West Yorkshire.

BES developed the structural design around the retained building fabric, incorporating new structural steelwork, a bespoke steel gable frame, masonry supports and padstones together with new timber floor and roof construction.

The engineering was developed to accommodate large new openings, significant alterations to the existing structure and complex interfaces between retained and new construction, while responding to the architectural geometry of the remodelled roof and upper level.

The project progressed through detailed structural design and construction, with the structural solution coordinated around the practical requirements of the build as the existing structure was opened up.

Engineering challenge

The extensive remodelling required substantial intervention into the existing structure to create larger open spaces and accommodate the revised upper-level and roof geometry. The structural design therefore needed to integrate new steel and timber elements with retained masonry while maintaining practical load paths and buildable connections.

Structural solution

BES developed an integrated structural solution incorporating new steel beams and columns, a bespoke steel gable frame, local masonry piers and padstones, and new timber floor and roof elements. Particular attention was given to the interfaces between the retained building and new construction and to developing details that could be practically implemented on site.

Construction

The project was followed through construction as the existing building was opened up and the new structural elements installed. This allowed the engineering to respond to the realities of the retained structure while preserving the architectural intent of the remodelled dwelling.
