Project overview
4 Kingdom Street forms part of the Paddington Central estate in west London, a large commercial campus of office buildings, public space and leisure accommodation arranged around the Grand Union Canal and the railway approaches into Paddington station. The building provides substantial open-plan office floorplates over ground-floor active frontage, with a composite steel frame supporting long clear spans and a highly serviced office environment.
The structural solution relies on a steel frame with composite metal deck floors, braced and cored stability, and a transfer strategy at low level where the office grid meets the constraints of the site below. Fabricated steelwork of this type demands early resolution of connection detailing, fit-up tolerances and erection sequence, because most of the value and programme risk sits in the workshop and on the crane rather than in the analysis.
Carl contributed to the structural steelwork engineering and delivery of the project while employed at William Hare Group, working within the design and detailing environment that converts consultant intent into fabricated, erectable steelwork.

Engineering challenge
A dense, logistically constrained central London site adjacent to live rail and canal infrastructure, where long-span office floorplates and tight erection sequencing had to be resolved through steelwork detailing rather than on site.
