Project overview
The BSkyB Meeting Centre forms part of the broadcaster's campus at Osterley in west London, providing conference, meeting and collaboration accommodation alongside the studio and office buildings on the same estate. Buildings of this kind are architecturally exposed and heavily used, so the structure is expected to perform visually as well as technically.
The scheme uses expressed structural steelwork, including feature staircases and open volumes, where members and connections are seen rather than concealed. Exposed steel of this type has to satisfy strength and stability requirements while also meeting stringent expectations on alignment, weld quality, surface finish and the visual treatment of connections. Vibration performance of stairs and lightweight floors also becomes a governing serviceability consideration rather than an afterthought.
Carl contributed to the structural steelwork engineering and delivery of the project while employed at William Hare Group, supporting the detailing and fabrication of the steel structure.
