Project overview
The cycle ramp forms part of the Stockport Interchange regeneration, providing an accessible, step-free connection between the transport interchange, Viaduct Park and the surrounding town centre. The spiral steel ramp allows cyclists and pedestrians to move between significantly different levels within a compact footprint in a dense town-centre setting.
A helical ramp is geometrically demanding: the deck is continuously curved and inclined, so setting-out, fabrication and erection tolerances have to be controlled closely, and torsional as well as bending effects govern the design of the deck and its supports. Gradient, landings and surface finish are set by accessibility requirements rather than structural convenience, and the ramp's slender, exposed form places emphasis on vibration performance, weathering, drainage and long-term maintenance access. Supports, foundations and articulation had to be threaded between existing infrastructure and the new public realm.
Carl contributed to the structural engineering design and delivery of the cycle ramp while employed at Renaissance Associates, working within the consultant design team.
