Steel beams
Beam sizing for wall removals, openings and extensions, including deflection, bearing and padstone checks.
Columns and posts
Steel and timber column design, baseplates, and load transfer down to foundation level.
Timber
Joists, rafters, purlins, flitch beams and trimming around openings, stairwells and dormers.
Masonry
Padstones, lintels, pier and wall capacity checks in existing and new masonry.
Reinforced concrete
Slabs, beams, pad and strip foundations, and retaining elements.
Foundations
Pads, strips, underpinning and foundations adjacent to existing buildings, trees and drains.
Typical projects
Load-bearing wall removal
Establishing what the wall carries, sizing the replacement beam and checking the supports and the structure beneath.
Extensions
Single and two-storey extensions: new openings in the existing rear wall, foundations near drains and trees, and roof structure.
Loft conversions
New floor structure, beams over existing walls, dormer framing, and the effect of the added load on what is below.
New structures
Garden rooms, garages, outbuildings and new-build frames designed from foundations upwards.
Building Regulations submissions
Calculations are issued as a checkable package: loading, assumptions, member checks and sketches, in the form Building Control bodies and approved inspectors expect to receive. Structural drawings and details are included where the appointment covers them; on smaller domestic work, annotated sketches with the calculations are often sufficient.
Where a builder or architect needs one beam confirmed quickly, the calculation can be issued for a single element rather than the whole scheme.
Queries from Building Control, architects, contractors and steel fabricators are answered directly by the engineer who prepared the calculations, so the design intent is not lost in translation on site.
Eurocode design approach
Design follows the Structural Eurocodes with the UK National Annexes: actions to BS EN 1991, concrete to BS EN 1992, steelwork to BS EN 1993, timber to BS EN 1995 and masonry to BS EN 1996.
Members are checked at ultimate limit state for strength and stability, and at serviceability limit state for deflection and, where relevant, vibration. Partial factors, load combinations and design assumptions are stated in the calculations rather than left implicit.
Structural calculations are a project-specific professional engineering service, prepared for a particular building, loading and set of site constraints, and issued under professional indemnity insurance. The free Resource Centre calculators are preliminary sizing aids for engineers and are not a substitute for issued calculations.
